In this article, Sontag argues that women, throughout their livelihood, have the beauty of the mind and the beauty of the body as separate virtues and to most, they don’t always go hand in hand. She begins by showing how the human perspective of beauty in women has shifted throughout history. This is from the Socrates timeline where intelligence and ugliness of mind were used as measures of beauty. She goes on to the Christian perspective of beauty where they considered following Christian virtues as the foundation of a beautiful woman. Also, she elaborates how beauty has been viewed in different perspective from a male and female viewpoint.
