In this article, Sontag argues that women, throughout their livelihood, have the beauty of the mind and the beauty of the body as separate virtues and to most, they don’t always go hand in hand. She begins by showing how the human perspective of beauty in women has shifted throughout history. This is from the Socrates timeline where intelligence and ugliness of mind were used as measures of beauty. She goes on to the Christian perspective of beauty where they considered following Christian virtues as the foundation of a beautiful woman. Also, she elaborates how beauty has been viewed in different perspective from a male and female viewpoint. She provides the reader with her growth history so that they can get the perspective on how the aspect of beauty has changed over the ages and both internal and external features are nowadays attributed to a beautiful woman. A woman can use their beauty in various ways, and it can act as a source of power, seduction, submission and many more. To the intelligent, it is the ultimate source of power a woman may possess, but to others, it forms the source of their ugly nature.
