A designer baby is an individual who has been created through a genetic screening or modification process. The traits which can be achieved through designer baby are gender, reducing the chances of being affected by a specific illness, it enhances the intelligence of the individual, and alters the general outlook of the baby. This discussion will focus on the cons of the designer baby.
The designer baby has its merits and demerits. Some of the pros include the life expectancy of the person is increased. Essentially, this can be achieved by discarding most of the unborn baby’s defectives genes, and the healthy ones are retained. Secondly, the probability of one acquiring genetic disorders is minimized (Raja). Diseases such as Down syndrome, Huntington’s disease, and Alzheimer’s are reduced. Further, the inherited diseases can be eliminated from the newborn. Such conditions include diabetes, cancer, and obesity.
Despite having advantages, there are several pros associated with the designer baby. Firstly, individuals who are born as a result of this practice are not perfect people (Explore Biotech). There are mistakes which can be made during the process resulting to some disabilities. Secondly, it can result in miscarriage if the process is not done correctly.
