Julia Alvarez
Julia Alvarez was born in 1950 in New York City but was a citizen of the Dominican Republic. Alvarez graduated from Middlebury College with a bachelor in arts degree and later obtained a master’s degree in Sycaruse University. Although she had been an author of poems and prose, her first successful novel, “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent” was published in 1991. She has received the Lamont prize and Fitzgerald award among others. Her published works include four poetry collections, four children books five novels and two adolescent fictions.
One of the novels Julia wrote was how the Garcia girls lost their accent. This novel tells the story of the Garcia girls lives in reverse order. The girls are Yolanda, Carla, Sofia, and Sandra and the novel is divided into three parts. The first part talks about their adult lives; the second part is about their adolescence and part three talks about their childhood in the Dominican up to the time they had to flee to the US (Alvarez 1).
Junot Diaz
Junot was born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic in 1968. At the age of six, they migrated to the United States with his mother and four siblings, where his father was working. Junot graduated from Rutgers in 1992 with BA and also earned his MFA in Cornell University. Junot lives in Cambridge and has taught writing in Massachutes Institute of Technology since 2002.
