Verbal vs. Non-Verbal Communication
The act of communication is regarded as a natural aspect. As such, it is the interaction between people and also the sharing of information. Therefore, regardless of whether a person speaks or not, they eventually manage to relay the message to the other party. There exist two types of communication that is verbal and non- verbal.
Verbal communication is a form of communication that tends to use words that interchange information between people through the method of speech or also writing (Argyle, 1). On the other hand, “we have nonverbal communication where there is no use of words which are used for communication” (Mehrabian, 1). But other methods of communication are used. i.e., there is the use of body language, sign language, facial expressions and so on. As such, we have tried to break down the important differences that exist between verbal and nonverbal communication (Mehrabian, 1).
Firstly, there is the difference between verbal and nonverbal through the aspect of meaning. This has been evidenced above. Additionally, there is the aspect of time. When compared between verbal and nonverbal communication, there is the situation that nonverbal communication is considered to be time-consuming when a message is passed through its medium.
