Atik, Deniz, and Cansu Yιldιrιm. “Motivations behind Acquiring Tattoos and Feelings of Regret: Highlights from an Eastern Mediterranean Context.” Journal of Consumer Behavior, vol. 13, no. 3, May 2014, pp. 212–223.
The articles focus on some of the reasons why people with tattoos sometimes tend to regret or express some feelings and it also discusses the possible motivational outcomes for being tattooed in the first place. Tattoos have been popular through history in different cultures and have been used as a means of modification of the body and require cost, time and endurance of pain. A tattoo was applied a powerful symbol of expression and a compelling symbol which was a mark of individuality. To others, it was not motivational but led to regrets.
Tattooing holds different meanings for different cultures and societies, and its history is traced to the Mediterranean. A reason that is attributed to inking the body was to prevent the body from diseases which might occur due to engaging in sex or as a means of moral living during pregnancy. The Greeks on the other side applied the use of tattoos as a form of recognition or a sign of possession by a human owner or a Devine. To some people, a tattoo has not used a modification but as a means of regret and those who inked themselves felt it was not morally acceptable.
