In recent news, there were twelve Thai boys from Thailand who were rescued from ThamLuang cave complex which was flooded. Although the rescue operation was successful with no cases of deaths, the boys may encounter a horrifying mental challenge of posttraumatic stress condition (Levietes, 2018). Pediatric practitioners have revealed that the boys are at a higher possibility of acquiring a mental disorder due to the two weeks they spent in darkness and claustrophobic conditions due to the exposure to the natural disaster.
Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder among children vary and depend on the kind of trauma that the child was exposed to and are similar to those of stress, depression, and anxiety (Levietes, 2018).In this case of the Thai boys, the symptoms expected in such trauma are fears especially for their safety and being moody or getting upset easily. Majorly, the cause of these symptoms is because the period the boys spent in the cave may bring back unwanted memories and feelings which are manifested through the signs. The boys may also show signs of lasting feelings of anxiety or physical reactions. This is manifested by experiencing difficulties in falling asleep, feeling angry or cranky, problems paying attention, getting startled easily, and being on the lookout for warning or danger signs.
