It is evident that millions of illegal immigrants that live in America face the risk of deportation or imprisonment (Orner 3). The immigrants live underground with little if any protection against the exploitation of law enforcement officers, human smugglers, and employers. Underground America gives a clear picture of the violation of civil and human rights of undocumented workers in the United States. What is evident from their account is the failure on the part of the American Government to handle undocumented immigrants that toil on its farms, fields, factories, and offices. Peter Orner’s account represents the politically oppressed and the poor undocumented persons in America, as well as people from Central America and Mexico. Orner also identifies the bare-bones homes and grueling workstations that define the workplaces of the immigrants. Irrespective of the origin and status of the immigrants, anxiety is the sole thing that they have in common.
Anxiety emanates from the fact that they live far away from their families and have to engage in constant battles with the loneliness monster (3). The fear of deportation drives them to different levels of solitude.
