Ergogenic aids are illegal, non-steroidal substances that get linked to improving sports performance. The term ergogenic means an increase in the rate of work output and it refers to any material or technique that improves athletic performance beyond an athlete’s natural ability and training. Blood doping, Creatine, and Erythropoietin are such examples of ergogenic drug that athlete’s use to harness their running and training prowess (Shane 260).
However, while some ergogenic aids are legal, some have been banned by sports organizations for various reasons. Blood doping is a technique that got discovered as a performance-enhancing technique by researchers in Finland and Sweden. The drug got banned from the sports world due to its known advantages in improving aerobic endurance and slowing muscular fatigue by transporting additional red blood cells to muscles. Blood doping entails removing and storing about one liter of an athlete’s blood one or two months before the competition. It then infuses the blood back into the athlete shortly before the game (261).
Erythropoietin is another drug that got banned from the sports world. A hormone produced by the kidneys in response to hypoxia and that stimulates production of red blood cells.
