Functions of the parietal lobe
The region of interest that the group identified is the parietal lobe. The parietal lobe is the section of the brain that is responsible for receiving and interpreting information that is transmitted by the tactile sensory organs. The parietal lobe processes information concerning touch, pressure, and pain. The lobe is also involved with processing and interpreting information on body orientation and helping in physical movements of the various parts of the body. The function helps in awareness of the spatial orientation of body parts, moving objects, and the processes involved when moving objects.
The parietal lobe allows us to chew food without biting the tongue, or walk without hitting the toes on an object on the floor by making us aware of the locations of various body parts and objects. The spatial information that the lobe relays is utilized by the oculomotor system and the visual system to influence visual attention. Studies indicate that people with lesions of the parietal lobe have challenges in coordinating complex movements (Bisley & Goldberg, 2010). The lobe is also associated with attention, and patients with lesions exhibit characteristics that denote attention deficit and apraxia.
