We learn that both are having “merry war” when Benedick is introduced to Beatrice. They keep trying to get into each other head. This kind of wits invoked past encounters. Beatrice claims to know Benedick of the “old,” and believes that he is just a “crow” and “very dull fool.” On the other hand, Benedick criticizes Beatrice to the level of using jades trick in his criticism. The fact that both already had a well-formed opinion about each other serves as an indication that the two had a previous encounter and also the fact that they referred to “old” versions of each other. From their conversation, there is enough tension that can only occur between people who have had a previous encounter. Their past encounter helped the two to know each other better.
