Prewriting
This is the primary stage of the writing process followed typically by drafting and revision. It consists mainly of a combination of outlining, storyboarding, diagramming, and clustering. This stage commences with audience awareness and motivation and helps the writer think of the things that are to be communicated in the paper. One of the most critical phases of this particular stage is choosing a topic and in the process, narrowing it. Different methods of selecting a topic can be applied like freewriting, researching and reading. The author also needs to strategize the organization of content by outlining and making use of prewriting periods to experiment with different means of idea expression. This stage can occur at any instance in the process of writing and is thus recursive.
Revision
This is often one of the last stages in the process of writing, and it involves making changes throughout the written draft for changed intentions. It entails seeing the draft from a critical and fresh perspective. Moreover, it consists of reconsidering one’s arguments, rethinking of the main ideas, refining of the paper’s purpose, and reorganization of the presentation (“Revising Drafts” N.p).
