The article by Hassmiller and Cozine (2006) highlights the problem of understaffing of nurses in the US. The duo notes that in the recent past, the health care sector has experienced a surge in the number of patients against a limited number of nurses leading to a compromised care delivery of vital services. The second part of the article identifies some of the practical measures that can be taken to address the issue of nurse shortage. The improvement of work processes, where nurses have everything they need at any given time alleviates feelings of frustrations leading to the retention of the nurses.
Further, adjustment of the organizational cultures so that nurses are appreciated and their contributions in health care facilities is helpful in motivation and increased job satisfaction (Hassmiller & Cozine, 2006). As a consequence, a limited number of nurses will leave the profession in favor of other fields of work. The information offered in this article contextualizes the problem of nurse shortage, and offers some of the viable measures essential for addressing the problem.
