Abstract
Every year, many criminals are imprisoned either on a long-term or short-term basis. The term prison is used to refer to a correctional facility where the wrongdoers are confined, rehabilitated as well as controlled in a strictly supervised environment. Ideally, a prison should serve to mend the unruly behavior of a criminal. On the other side, it is critical to recognize the fact that being sentenced to prison comes with a lot of adverse effects not only on the individuals but also the family members, community and the country at large. As a result, therefore, this has attracted the United Nations to establish various norms as well as standards that support the need for carrying out prison reforms. Thus, through this paper, the researcher looks forward to discussing the effects of imprisonment and the need to carry out various changes in the prisons. Most inmates do not access the positive results of their detention.
