“Everyday Use” by Alice Walker
The short story, “Everyday Use” makes indistinct the dissimilarities between the actual lives of the African American women living in the rural areas and the stereotypes. From a stereotypic angle, Mama’s description of her home denotes the type of lives led by poor African American farmers in the past. Nonetheless, her home can be viewed as adequately organized and clean to the extent that she finds it relaxing. She states, “A yard like this is more comfortable than most people know. It is not just a yard. It is like an extended living room,” (Walker 23). It can be viewed that since she expects Dee, her eldest daughter, not to acknowledge her lifestyle, she is comfortable with her reality and pleased with her accomplishments. Through the first person narrative, the reader is able to comprehend and appreciate Mama’s lifestyle without any form of judgment. In other words, the description of the setting, through Mama’s narration, is neutral rather than depicting poverty or glam.
The fact that Mama does not identify herself to the reader regarding her name indicates that she does not want the attention to be on her. She depicts herself as hardworking and humble in addition to her being her family’s head.
