Ecosystems provide services to human beings and other organisms, and it is for this reason that they rely on them. There are different ecosystems, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of them include marine, freshwater, desert and forest ecosystems. Changes to these ecosystems can cause drastic consequences because of the support system they offer to human beings and to the organisms they support. Human activities are considered some of the great risks to ecosystems. The desert ecosystem is, however, an ecosystem that can change and yet have minimal implications on the planet. They have by low precipitation, sparse vegetation and animal species highly adapted to the desert condition. A desert ecosystem offers minimal services to humans and other organisms and because of their harsh conditions, can have minimal impacts on the planet when wiped out.
The choice of a desert is because of its harsh conditions associated with little to no precipitation and also the minimal ecosystem services it provides to humans and other organisms. Desertification is also a significant problem that increases threats of drought, create risks of wildfires and affect the vegetation by replacing trees and shrubs with fast-growing grasses. Desertification is a problem associated with the spread of desert conditions to non-desert areas (Desertification, 2014).
