Chapter 9 Discussion
‘Prisoner without a name, cell without a number’ is a melancholy book that describes the terrorist state in Argentina. Jacob Timerman is a well known and a respected editor of a famous Argentina paper called “La Opinion”. The novel is gripping as Jacob gives his personal experience which makes the book indulging and personal. In chapter 9, the novel talks about Jacob Timerman experience in jail as he awaits his appearance before a Special War Council. Jacob expresses the fear, distrust, and injustice experienced in jail, through relating to people going through the same pain in different parts of the world.
Firstly, the condition of the jail is terrible as the prisoner is incommunicado and has to ask to knock on the door whenever he needs to use the toilet. These are unhealthy conditions to keep a prisoner especially, since later during the appearance, he is found to be innocent of the accusations. Additionally, Jacob explains to his readers that Argentina does not have a trustworthy government and remembers when he was only fourteen years old and his brother was arrested during one of the misunderstandings. His mother comes and explains that the attacks were from the outside, therefore, Jacob’s brother was innocent.
