In a book that talks about the history of the Cuban revolution, I would date the book as 1953-1959. This is because the revolution began in July 1953 when Castro decided to fight against Fulgencio Batista who was the president of Cuba. Castro formed a group of rebels to fight against Batista’s military. The rebel group was known as “The Movement.” In July the rebel groups launched an attack on the Moncada Barracks which failed as many of the rebels were killed, and Castro was arrested. Castro was tried and then jailed for fifteen years in the Isla de Pinos (Samuel 96). Castro renamed his group as “26th of July Movement.”
He was pardoned by the government in 1955 as Batista’s government did not consider him as the political threat anymore. After his release, Castro fled to Mexico with Raul Castro who was his brother. They met Marxist-Leninist Che Guevara. They formed a small revolutionary group that aimed at overthrowing Batista. In 1956, the small revolutionary group sailed across Mexico and landed in Los Cayuelos where they attacked Batista’s forces (Samuel 186). They camped at Sierra Maestra mountain range from where they carried out their guerrilla attacks against Batista’s army. They were with recruits and, their number increased with time.
