Notes of a Native Son is a collection of James Baldwin’s essays. Racial discrimination and segregation were rampant during his time. In this essay, James Baldwin describes the state of racial discrimination in the United States. He describes how black people are treated harshly and condemned to live in poverty. He talks about riots and how they result in the destruction of property. He also describes his bad relationship with his father. They rarely spoke and it was only on his funeral that he realized he would have done better. Due to the extreme racism, the black people were bitter. They were bitter against the white people, as witnessed in Baldwin attacking the waitress. The bitterness, however, was self-destructing at times as it denied black people opportunities. Baldwin’s father did not want help offered by the white teacher.
Baldwin talks about his sour relationship with his father (Baldwin 587). They do not relate well up until on his funeral when he regrets having not established a good relationship with his father. His father had a mental problem that inhibited him from interacting freely with others as he suffered from paranoia. Baldwin also experienced the same disease, fearing that he may inherit his father’s condition. Baldwin’s family lived in abject poverty.
